M4 Sherman (US040)

Production of the M4 Sherman series of tank was started in March 1941, but these first models were the M4A1 with cast hulls. Later factories introduced into the Sherman building program manufactured the Sherman with welded hulls as they had no provision to cast hulls. This was the M4.

The first M4 became available in July 1942.

After combat experience the Shermen soon became known as the Ronson (lights first time) by US crews, and the Tommy Cooker by the Germans. It achieved this reputation because of its tendency to burn after penetration. It was decided to up-armour the vulnerable areas near ammunition and fuel storage with extra armoured plates. This appliqué armour was added to later production models in the factory and retrofitted in field workshops to earlier models.

A total of 6748 M4 Shermans were made.

Our newly re-mastered M4 represents a M4 Sherman as commonly found in armoured divisions in Normandy 1944 complete with appliqué armour and a choice of either the narrow M34 gun mount or wider M34A1.
