Sherman I, Medium Tank, M4 - Identified by its welded hull, square edges and narrow M34 gun mount. The first Sherman M4's stormed ashore during the Normandy Invasion. Pack contains 1 Tank and 1 Tank Commander.

The Sherman I, or Sherman M4 for the US, although being the first model to be approved was actually the third version of the General Sherman tank to go into production. From July 1942 until January 1944 a total of 6748 gun tanks were built in five factories.

This model received all the standard upgrades along with the rest of the Sherman family, with the exception of the 76mm gun and it’s accompanying wet ammo stowage. It retained the 75m M3 gun for it’s entire production life (apart from 105mm howitzer armed versions).

This kit represents a Sherman I as it would appear during the Normandy landings with the choice of narrow or wide gun mantlet and appliqué armour plates added over the ammo stowage bins and gunners position in the turret.

The Sherman I was first used by the British in action in any significant numbers during the Normandy invasion.

It was powered by the Wright R-975-C1 9 cylinder radial aero engine, the same engine as the Sherman II, or Sherman M4A1.

In Flames of War

This tank is a mainstay of British armoured units in the late war, alongside other models of lend-lease Shermans used by British and Commonwealth armoured regiments.

The armour rating of 6-4-1, although getting a little low by the late war, is still reasonable and you also get the ability to fire smoke along with an AP of 10, allied with a useful FP of 3+.
