Soviet industry proved up to the task of providing the Red Army with excellent tanks and self-propelled guns that were effective and capable fighting machines, fast to produce, and easy for the crews to use. Well supported by the 'Gods Of War' and their ZIS guns, Soviet Tank Shock Groups would break through any defences or die trying!

The T-34/85 (85MM)

The new T-34/85 that entered production at the end of 1943 joined existing battalions. It was a major improvement over the earlier T-34/76, having a new turret with thicker armour mounting a long 85mm gun. This new tank was more than a match for the German Mark IV tanks, and approaches the massive Panther tank in its killing power.

The IS-2 (122MM)

The IS-2 heavy tank was designed to replace the aging KV tanks as the Guards heavy breakthrough units. It was equipped with the massive D25-T 122mm gun for hunting the enemy heavy tanks. With 120mm armour on the front and 90mm on the side, the tank was well protected for duty on the eastern front.

The IS-2 first saw action in the Spring of 1944. IS-2 units were assigned to important operations and often led the initial assaults as they did in Operation Bagration in June 1944.

The ISU-152 (152MM)

The heavy guns of the ISU-152 could be found supporting assaulting infantry with direct fire. Their ability to instantly destroy bunkers, buildings, and defensive positions provided excellent infantry support.

The ISU-122 more often supported advancing Soviet tank battalions by providing overwatching fire. They would generally take up a position on the flanks of the tank formations and use their large guns to target enemy anti-tank guns, tank-hunters, and panzers

The 76MM ZIS-3 GUN

Like many things in the Red Army, the artillery lacks subtlety. On the other side of the equation, the ‘Red God Of War’ makes up for this in sheer weight of fire. The lightweight and mobile 76mm ZIS-3 field gun forms the mainstay of the artillery.
